Joining Lazos was a turning point for Isabel. She found a community that supported her and helped her unify domestic workers, leading to significant achievements like the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in New Jersey. As a coordinator within Lazos, Isabel has been instrumental in organizing and representing workers throughout the state. She is now preparing to take classes at Rutgers University to further her training in group organization and the implementation of the bill, which became law on July 1, 2023. New Jersey is now the 12th state to have such a bill, and Isabel, alongside her colleague Helica, is working tirelessly to inform both workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities under this new law.

 

Isabel’s dedication goes beyond legislation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was on the front lines, organizing food pantries and providing vital information to community members, some of whom only spoke indigenous languages from Mexico. She even went out at 5 am with her baby to distribute tests and health information. As a trained community care worker, Isabel’s commitment made a significant impact during those challenging times.

 

Isabel is not just an advocate; she’s also a devoted mother of four young children and three adult daughters. Her involvement with Lazos has inspired her children to be active in the organization as well. She believes deeply in the power of community and mutual support, empowering women to pursue their rights and dreams. Isabel’s story is one of strength and resilience, showing how women can come together to create positive change.

 

Lazos, predominantly led by women, provides a platform for Mexican-American women and first-generation immigrants to support one another. Isabel emphasizes that Lazos is more than an organization; it’s a bond that connects people, supporting each other through good times and bad. Each woman in Lazos brings her own story and experiences, creating a powerful and unified community.

 

Isabel also plays a crucial role in cultural education. She participates in events like Guelaguetza and educates her children’s teachers and classmates about Mexican culture. At home, she ensures her children stay connected to their roots by speaking Spanish, cooking Mexican food, and upholding family traditions and values.

 

Isabel Basurto’s journey from a young nanny to a key advocate within Lazos is a heartfelt story of empowerment and community. She continues to inspire and uplift those around her, working tirelessly to ensure that domestic workers are recognized and valued for their contributions. Her personal dedication and the love she has for her community shine through in everything she does.
